Bill is skeptical... about the ALIENS!

Have you ever ordered something online and then completely forgot that it was even coming to you? Well, I sure have! After court on Monday, I came home to a mystery package on my kitchen table. I didn’t realize until I opened it that it was the new album, T-shirt, and signed poster from one of my favorite bands: Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s. I know they have a totally goofy name, but when I heard their first album a few years ago I was immediately hooked. I was so excited for this album to arrive, but I forgot about it because I had ordered it weeks ago.

I listened to the album that night in my room. Unfortunately, the album did not come with the lyrics, so I had to go back to a couple of songs to understand them. Margot has had a totally different feel on each of their 3 albums. The first album had a very indie sound, the second was somewhat folky, and this one is definitely a rock album. I definitely liked this album, but I miss their earlier work quite a bit. A lot of the original members of the band have left and as a result, their sound is constantly changing. They have an awesome song that is apparently about Bill Nye the Science Guy. In the song, the lead singer keeps repeating “Bill is skeptical about the aliens” as well as “Someday you will love someone as much as you love science.” I also like a song called My Baby Cares for the Animals, but besides these 2 songs I really wasn’t very impressed by the album.

I had a hard rough time just trying to find time to listen to this album. I have been very busy with keeping up with homework and this ridiculous court case. Stressful stuff, but at least I have music to calm me down! Thanks for reading!

We have the Facts and We're Voting Yes!!!

When I went through my itunes library I came across a lot of albums I have not gotten the chance to hear. One album stood out way more today than any other. Death Cab for Cutie has been one of my favorite bands since my senior year of high school. I was lucky enough to have been able to see them live downtown in Chicago 2 years ago. They were amazing live, but I realized that I only knew their latest 3 albums and was a little disappointed in myself when they played a few older songs I had never heard in my life. I promised myself I would check out their earlier albums but just never really got around to doing so. Last Christmas, however, I received their second album: “We have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes.” I decided that tonight would be the night that I listened to this album!

I followed my usual game-plan of lying down on my bed with my laptop and headphones, except this time I had Wheat Thins instead of Goldfish. This album became my favorite from Death Cab for Cutie. Every song was perfect to me from start to finish. Death Cab’s later albums have a very poppy sound to them, while this one had a much eerier indie sounds instead. A few of my favorites on the album include: The Employment Pages, Lowell, MA, 405, and Company Calls. I would definitely recommend checking these songs out, especially if you are already a fan of Death Cab.

This album definitely gave me “the warm and fuzzies,” and I am so happy I finally got around to giving it a chance. I guess the only obstacle I have found in the way of my goal is my social life. People think it is weird if you sit in your room and listen to music by yourself on a weekend. I think I might try and listen with a friend sometime soon, I just hope they don’t distract me from the music. This goal is still going very well for me. It is great to finally set aside time to listen to music I want to hear. I’m glad to report that I am still totally obsessed with Dear and the Headlights, as well! Hooray for Leisure!

Dear and the Headlights

On Wednesday, September 1st, I officially began working towards my leisure goal to catch up on new music. I listened to an album titled “Small Steps, Heavy Hooves” from a band called Dear and the Headlights. My friend, Jake, who is also the guitarist in my band back home gave me this album along with around 30 other albums the night I came down to Carbondale. He pointed out Dear and the Headlights in particular and said he thought I would definitely like them. Needless to say, Jake hit the nail on the head with this pick for me!

I sat on my bed with a box of Flavor Blasted Goldfish, Juicy Juice, my laptop, song lyrics, and a pair of headphones as I checked out this new band. It was pretty much heaven in Carbondale that Wednesday night! The band has a very unique Indie sound and something about the vocalist’s voice is hypnotizing to me. My favorite song on the album is called, Skinned Knees and Gapped Teeth. This song makes a reference to Lion-O and Thundercats, which definitely hit my funny bone pretty hard. Now I know what I want to be for Halloween; Lion-O, I will make you proud!

This project is proving to be an awesome experience! The combination of my laziness, craving of Goldfish, and love of music is easily the perfect leisure goal for me. The only problem I had on this particular night was my social life. Friends of mine were knocking on my door while I was floating on my little musical cloud. Sometimes it’s a curse to be such a popular guy… Just kidding! I was actually surprised by how easy it was to just sit down and listen to this album. I’m going to try and go to different locations this year and listen to the albums and maybe even try to find someone who wants to start listening with me. This first entry was a huge success and I found a band that I truly enjoyed hearing. Welcome to “my favorite music” on my Facebook page, Dear and the Headlights!
